Battle Ball

A sport game by Milton Bradley, for ages 8 and up. The game combined racket sports with the martial art of Kendo. Battle Ball contains two double headed rackets on a steel shaft and an inflatable ball. Milton Bradley had a long history of making board games and table-top plastic action games. The company wanted to expand into the outdoor space with action games based on a recognizable sport. I created this project with co-designer on a lunch break. While we were investigating toys in an aisle of Toys R Us, we picked up two toy traffic stop signs to in an attempt to paddle each other. I picked up a second stop sign and held both of them in my hands with the signs pointing in opposite directions. When I tried to paddle my friend, he threw a ball at me in defense. I paddled the ball back to him and discovered we had a game we could co-develop that had an aggressive “battle-like”  feel to the play action.
